Myrla Ocfemia is a representational painter.

Her journey into the landscape of painting life started with painting landscapes through to figures and portraits in acrylic and in impressionist style. Other than touch ups or if painting on a larger canvas which she does by sections and has to be done the next time, she is an alla prima painter. It suits her personality.

Portrait and figure paintings extract a certain challenge for her because she is painting a form that should give an illusion of three dimensions and at the same time will capture a representation of the subject’s character, emotion and the mood of the painting itself. She starts her painting by sketching, freehand, which gives her much additional enjoyment.

From a young age, she enjoyed very much looking at artworks, especially paintings. She first enjoyed paintings for their subjects. As her interest grew through attending painting exhibitions and through her friends in her early life who had degrees in fine arts and who helped her to further understand and appreciate paintings, she became drawn to the light, shadow, colour temperature and texture of impressionistic paintings.

When Myrla started to take up painting, she was totally talentless . She had never drawn before. It is by sheer determination, patience and passion that she is at this point in her painting journey.

She would say “I’m mostly self-taught.”, though she heard others say that we are all self -taught; how else can we learn to paint if we didn’t teach ourselves to do it. Nevertheless, she learned techniques from some excellent contemporary painters through you tube demonstrations and online video classes. She also reads (and watches) anything about painting, that she can get her hands on and so she learns something new everyday! She started painting in January 2020 and her very first portrait was painted in October 2020. Painting is the journey she wants to complete through to the end.

She lives and works in Victoria, Australia.
